Panasonic's AMG8833 Grid-EYE sensor is an 8x8 array (64 Pixel) of IR thermal sensors. When interfaced with your microcontroller or Raspberry Pi, it provides an array of 64 individual infrared temperature readings through I2C. Representing the next generation of 8x8 thermal IR sensors from Panasonic, it surpasses its predecessor, the AMG8831, in performance. The sensor exclusively supports I2C and includes a configurable interrupt pin that triggers when any pixel surpasses or falls below a user-set threshold.

This component measures temperatures within the range of 0C to 80C (32F to 176F) with an accuracy of +- 2.5C (4.5F). It can detect a human presence from a distance of up to 7 meters (23 feet). With a maximum frame rate of 10Hz, it is perfect for crafting your own human detector or mini thermal camera. Code is available for implementing this breakout on an Arduino or compatible platform (communicating over I2C) or on a Raspberry Pi with Python. On the Pi, assisted by the SciPy Python library for image processing, we achieved impressive results by interpolating the 8x8 grid.
